A Web-Based Intervention Preparing Adolescents to Transition to Adult Care for Sickle Cell Disease

The objective of this proposal is to explore new interaction techniques for patient adherence and behavior change. We are applying a consumer text-to-speech animated avatar technology to develop educational videos for teens with sickle cell disease. These videos help them develop chronic disease management knowledge and self-care skills as they prepare to transition to adult care. Videos are accessed online through an educational framework based on Khan Academy software. This framework will give assessments related to the study online, as well as provide incentives such as points and badges, and social networking features such as Q&A. We will compare a cohort of subjects that have access to an in-person Teen Clinic program to subjects elsewhere in Georgia to determine the relative efficacy of "online-only" with "online plus in-person" education.
