Non-invasive Diagnosis of Airway Resistance

Asthma and RSV causes reactive narrowing of the airway with large increases in resistance. A simple, non-invasive method to quantify resistance would help assess severity for acute care and provide a quantitative endpoint for evaluating new treatments. We propose to develop a quantitative measure of airway resistance based on the consumer media technologies of an iPhone application and a Kinect box. The 3-D image of chest volume over time can provide resistance amounts using a mechanical model of the lung. We will validate the derived resistance against indepoendent tests of whole body plethysmography and pulsus paradoxus by photopletysmography.
