Minute Med is a medical vending machine supported by ingeniously developed in-house software. Leveraging some of the latest technologies and tools available, it provides an all-encompassing solution to an individual looking for immediate symptomatic relief for trivial health problems. By relieving small symptoms at work, Minute Med can completely eliminate both presenteeism and absenteeism in the workplace.
The software has a repository of thousands of real-world cases of patients/individuals having similar symptoms. Upon entering symptoms in the interactive query system, the application scans through the database and runs numerous intelligent algorithms—thereby ferreting out a match. These retrieved suggestions also have a match percentage indicating the degree of accuracy (a 100% match would mean an exact similar case has been witnessed and treated). In addition, the software also provides the user an option to have a real-time live chatting session with a remote nurse practitioner. This may involve obtaining printable prescriptions for severe problems, simply discussing symptoms to reconcile any doubts, or simply consulting about health-related issues. There would also be provision to save the current case of the user into the database. By doing this, frequent usage would make the database more accurate with fine tuning and updates of everyday cases using the vending machine.
Through our solution, we hope mitigate absenteeism, eliminate presenteeism and decrease the risk that individuals undergo by self-treatment. By having an over-the-counter vending machine in the workplace, worksites without clinics and/or pharmacies can benefit from increased work efficiency and avoid underperformance of ill employees. Moreover, it prevents hours wasted waiting in queues at clinics for trivial problems like colds and headaches. This situation gets especially magnified when a location is suffering from a localized epidemic or pandemic, such as the H1N1 flu.

For the project, we created a medication vending kiosk with "smart software" installed and accessible through a touch screen. MinuteMed serves as a diagnoser, medication dispenser, and venue to talk to an online nurse practitioner or other health professional. The program operates by comparing a patient's symptoms to past cases and a database of patient records, and it attempts to recommend an over-the-counter drug that will temporarily alleviate symptoms. If its able to successfully determine the ailment and recommend a medication, it will dispense it. If the software cannot recommend a medication with a predetermined percentage of accuracy, the patient will be routed to an online healthcare professional and can talk through their symptoms. This professional will have the ability to help the patient to the next step in treatment or write an electronic prescription that can be taken to a local pharmacy. This program can also be used from an employee's computer (without the touch screen interaction), and the medication can be dispensed to a central kiosk in the workplace. The billing would be either centralized or done at the patient’s work place and taken out of his pay check.
