The US is facing a crisis of healthcare cost and quality. Working with many collaborators within and outside Georgia Tech, our research group focuses on improving health and healthcare by conducting design research and by creating policy. We concentrate on two questions: 1) How the design of buildings, sites and campuses can increase everyday physical activity; 2) How the evidence-based and innovative design of healthcare facilities can improve quality, safety and efficiency for patients, families, staff and organizations. In this talk I will present:

  • Recent research showing that building design strategies such as visible and accessible stairs can increase everyday physical activity and how we are integrating these into Active Living Guidelines for the City of New York.
  • The next-generation Emory Hospital neuro-ICU and our emerging findings about its performance.
  • The Military Health System’s $11B hospital replacement and modernization program and how they are incorporating evidence-based design into 120 major projects including the replacement of Walter Reed Military Hospital, through a program of research, guidelines, checklists and a major innovation center.
